Gear addiction: Want vs Need

Do we really need all the gear we have or did we just want it? Gear is one of those topics everyone is always speaking about. This new lens, that flashgun, sometimes even that new camera body. However 9 times out of 10 that new product isn’t even necessary. Canon RumorsDigital Rev and Jessops definitely have my attention for many hours every month. Luckily my bank account stays in tact. I am happy with the camera and lenses I own because it is what I need to take the type of photos I take.

What gear do you really need?

Have you decided on the subject matter/s you will focus on? If so then there is now a vast amount of information available for someone to narrow down what they actually needed for their kit. Once an individual has their key pieces of equipment their focus should then switch completely to the photos. Are you improving? Then obviously update your gear since it will aide in creating the quality you now require.

less is more

In these circumstances this really does ring true. Is there any point in having a piece of equipment that does the same as something you already own?  Can you achieve your photographic goals with the lenses you already own? If your answer to the last question was yes I think you know what you should do! Don’t get me wrong if you happen to have the money lying around and you want it all go ahead but the production of your photos should not suffer.

my gear

FYI I have a Canon 5D Mk3, 24-105mm F4, 50mm F1.8, 85mm F1.8, 100mm F2.8 Macro. To be honest my 100mm Macro has not made it a beneficial investment, the image quality is stunning but I haven’t utilised the macro enough

My Back is truly grateful to me for not having a gear addiction! Having only the gear you need makes travelling around easier too. So what are you going to do next time you are tempted by new gear?
